Kickstart Your Engineering Career: Co-op Opportunities at Trans Mountain (May 2025)

Trans Mountain is actively seeking talented and motivated engineering students for co-op opportunities starting in May 2025. Gain invaluable experience on a dynamic and nationally important project while contributing to a team committed to safety and environmental responsibility.

Available Positions:

Field Engineering Co-op Student (8-month term):

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the development of Engineered Job Plans for brownfield construction projects.
  • Support the implementation of Engineered Job Plans for field-based activities at various operational facilities.
  • Support the management and development of capital and operational projects, which could include project concept development, procurement and forecasting.
  • Support field engineering in the red-lining and review of various process diagrams and engineering drawings.
  • Exposure to purchasing activities, contractor management, field execution and project close-out activities.

Qualifications and Professional Experience:

  • Currently working towards a post-secondary degree, in your 3rd or 4th year of Mechanical, Chemical, or Civil Engineering.
  • Ability to take on tasks proactively.
  • Technical understanding of pipelines would be an asset.
  • Proficient in Microsoft suite of software (ex., Outlook/Word/Excel/SharePoint/Teams).
  • Must be a team player with a positive attitude.
  • Self-motivated, capable of performing tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Able to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Attention to detail is critical.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and handle strict deadlines.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Personal vehicle with valid driver’s license.
  • Experience working in operational facilities would be an asset.
  • Familiarity with Process Flow Diagrams and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams.

Pipeline Integrity Co-op Student (12-month term):

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in updating Pipeline Integrity technical documents, procedures and standards and ensuring compliance to regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with the data collection and filing of annual performance indicator reports.
  • Assist with addressing Corrective and Preventative Action plans assigned to the Pipeline Integrity Department resulting from recent Internal Audits.
  • Assist engineers in completion of anomaly investigation tasks such as QA/QC of non-destructive examination (NDE) reports.
  • Assist in gathering regulatory filing requirements for areas of class location change.
  • Assist the Risk Engineer in the QA/QC of in-line inspection tool data, field dig information, and other pipeline integrity data prior to loading into the risk database.
  • Assist the in-line inspection team with the planning of in-line inspection tool runs.
  • Archive field coating evaluation reports.

Qualifications and Professional Experience:

  • Currently working towards a post-secondary institute degree, in your 2nd or 3rd year of your Mechanical, Chemical, Civil, Petroleum or other Engineering.
  • Enrollment in your institution’s co-op program is a requirement.
  • Self-motivated, capable of performing tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to take on tasks proactively.
  • Technical understanding of pipelines would be an asset.

Pipeline Engineering Co-op Student (8-month term):

Key Responsibilities

  • Performing engineering calculations such as sizing pipes, pumps, and valves; calculating pressure, temperature, flow rates, and power.
  • Preparing technical reports such as study reports, engineering assessment reports, failure analyses, and optimization studies.
  • Analyzing the pipeline operating data including pressure, temperature, flow rate, pump running hours, variable frequency drive (VFD) revolutions per minute (RPM), control valve percentage, power consumption, minimum, maximum, average, and trends.
  • Analyzing the Fluids batch data including batch contents, injections, deliveries, batch sizes, and content trends.
  • Maintain, update and develop pipeline database including design database structure, data input/output, and edit reports.
  • Build and run pipeline hydraulic models by using the Synergi Pipeline Simulator, Pipephase, and Pipeflo.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Professional Experience

  • Must be enrolled in an Engineering related bachelor’s degree (e.g., Process Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering & Petroleum Engineering), preferably in 3rd year of studies and registered with your post-secondary Co-op program.
  • Strong mathematics skills for data analysis.
  • Strong English written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in at least one programming language and Database knowledge: VBA, PowerBI, Matlab, C++, Python, Access, or SQL.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook. Must be a team player with a positive attitude.
  • Self-motivated, capable of performing tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Able to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and handle strict deadlines with strong organizational skills.
